DTSTAMP:20190722T010723Z
DESCRIPTION:Birdwatchers are among the most environmentally-aware and engaged groups in the wider Australian community, and bird guides sell in the hundreds of thousands. Peter was one of the artists for the Australian Bird Guide, published by CSIRO in 2017. SUMMARY:Southern Tablelands Arts: Habit Corridors Forum
CREATED:20190725T012555Z
DTSTAMP:20190725T012555Z
DESCRIPTION:The Habitat Corridors program will be an immersive science and creative interactive process aiming to build awareness around endangered species and habitats in regional NSW, focusing specifically on the Hilltops region. Funded by Inspiring Australia for National Science Week, the program is designed to appeal not only to artists and environmentalists, but also farmers, land- holders and communities in the area. We are delighted to be working with the Office of Environment and Heritage, Glideways, Landcare and Hilltops Council to deliver this project.\NLearn about local threatened species including the Squirrel Glider, Superb Parrot, Scarlet Robin and the Flame Robin and their habitats during a workshop involving print making and paper dyeing. Beginning with two 6 hour creative workshops at the Old Court House in Murrumburrah, the program will culminate with a public forum at the Mechanics Institute in Harden, consisting of five speakers and addressing arts and science for change. There will also be an exhibition of the artworks produced during the two creative workshops.\NThe first workshop will consist of a talk with the Office of Environment and Heritage about the local and regional habitat corridors and their protection and growth. This will be followed by the print making workshops responding to the local threatened species and their habitats.\NThe workshops will be guided by professional textile artist Julie Ryder. “I am excited to be working on the Habitat Corridors project because it focuses on endangered species of the area and their place within our environment,” said Julie. “By looking at the symbiotic relationship between fauna and flora, we gain a more holistic view of the imbalances that are now occurring within nature. As an artist I use local vegetation as both materials and a source of inspiration to engage visually with the wider community on these important issues.”\NThe workshops are booked out.\NThe art exhibition and environment forum will be held on the 10 August from 2pm to 5 pm. \NIf you are interested in attending or would like more information contact Southern Tablelands Arts on 02 4823 4407 or email ao@southerntablelandsarts.com.au.

SUMMARY:Sutton Landcare Group: Irrigation water, soil nutrients and salt
CREATED:20190919T211642Z
DTSTAMP:20190919T211642Z
DESCRIPTION:On 8 October Dr Richard Stirzaker from CSIRO will come and talk with the Sutton Landcare Group about improving crop yields through better management of irrigation water, soil nutrients and salt. Dr Stirzaker is an authority on soils and soil moisture. As a part of his work at CSIRO Agriculture and Food, he is involved with the Virtual Irrigation Academy (VIA) where anyone can learn about improving crop yields. For the vast majority of those who use water to grow food, there is no simple way to know how well irrigation is managed. The 'Chameleon system' is a way of measuring soil water by producing colour patterns. These patterns tell you whether the soil is too wet or dry, how deep rain and irrigation moves into the soil and where roots are taking up water. They believe that water, nutrients, and salt have to be measured together in order to really understand what is happening when we add water to the land in order to grow food. The work is primarily funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and is directed at farmers in developing countries.VIA has become a global network where monitoring sensors are buried on farms around the world. Each crop that is grown and monitored provides a unique colour pattern of water, nitrate and salt, and data are shared on the VIA website. In an interview, Dr Stirzaker said: "Soil physics is boring to most but turning water into food for the vulnerable on earth is not."We hope you can join us on the 8th of October; Sutton School; 7.30 pm.The presentation will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions and supper.Arnold DekkerCoordinatorSutton Landcare Group

CREATED:20200217T165303Z
DTSTAMP:20200217T165303Z
DESCRIPTION:6.30 for 7.00pm 6th AUGUST\NWho: Tony Hill will lead our discussion. He is an accredited Holistic Management educator and EOV Master Verifier with the Savory Institute and employed as a NSW TAFE teacher for the Holistic Management Diploma. Tony is joint founder and Executive Chair of the Australian Holistic Management Co-operative that delivers EOV and Land to Market Australia.\NJacqui Stol will be moderating the meeting so members can ask questions.\N \NWhat: A discussion about Soil Health and Holistic Farming\NDrought, fires, floods, pandemic! What’s next? Are we under attack from nature? In our personal lives? In our farming? In our attempts to manage land? Are these national and global catastrophes connected? What do they have to do with soil?\NBring your questions, topics and priorities for a Murrumbateman Landcare discussion.\NDuring this session we will have the opportunity to discuss how Allan Savory has developed Holistic Management over the last five decades as a straightforward approach to managing the complexity of our challenges: ecological, financial, social. The Holistic Management framework can show us how natural disasters may be linked, including to our own management decisions, and can provide practical tools that can be used to manage our land.\NNow, Allan’s Savory Institute is offering a new initiative that links robust monitoring and verification of production farmland, with the opportunity for businesses and consumers to choose spending in a way that builds biodiversity and soil health. More than 40 baseline monitoring sites have been established through Ecological Outcome Verification in Australia, and new businesses are coming on board as market partners of Land to Market Australia.\N \NWhere: On Zoom in the comfort of your own home.\N \NWhen: Jacqui will invite members into the meeting from 6.30pm on 6th August with the discussion starting at 7.00pm.\N \NRSVPs: email Bob by 5th August but earlier would help.\N \NNOTE: When you join the meeting, if you don’t have Zoom already installed the system will ask you if you want to either install  Zoom or run the session through your Browser.\N \NNote: Tony’s Presentation Will be loaded to our website for future reference and for those who can’t make the meeting.\N

SUMMARY:Sutton Landcare: An update on Lake George research
CREATED:20200802T225329Z
DTSTAMP:20200802T225329Z
DESCRIPTION:An update on the Lake George research on lake levels and climate change\NThe past as a key to the future\N \NOn 11 August 2020 Sutton Landcare will hold its second presentation for the year, at the Sutton Primary School from 7.30. Like everywhere else, we will abide by the COVID-19 rules, which means social distancing, hand sanitising and leaving the classroom as clean as possible. We are very pleased the Sutton Primary School has been supportive of Landcare once again.\N If you feel uncomfortable joining us in person, you can follow the presentation via Zoom. Please contact us via email on sutton.landcare@gmail.com and we will email you the registration details.\N The presentation will be given by Dr Brad Opdyke from the ANU.  He will update us on his research at Lake George. He sent us the following abstract:\N"When we started the Lake George project the correlation between warmer climate and lake levels in Lake George was and is pretty clear, i.e. if sea surface temperatures around the northwest of Australia were high then the area around Lake George certainly enjoyed more rain, and more consistent rain. However, as most people know from their own experience on their own properties, the last several decades have been some of the driest in the past century.  So, what gives? Why the disconnect? We know the planet is heating up and the waters of the Indo-Pacific warm pool are heating up as well. As the project has progressed, Brad learned more about the detailed climatology of southeast Australia and importantly the difference between relatively stable climate states and a ‘transient’ state.  The transient, from a climate modelers perspective is the path you follow from one relatively stable climate to the next.  At the moment we are in a dramatic transient.  To cut a longer story short, the transient state can be very different to more stable conditions.  The good news is that a stable slightly hotter world will probably be significantly wetter and more humid than the conditions we are now experiencing.  The bad news is that during the transient, while temperatures are rapidly increasing, we will experience wildly variable fluctuations in rainfall, from year to year.  And like the stock market during COVID-19 the amplitude of the swings in rainfall, for example, will be extreme, and probably will be more extreme if the global temperature rise is allowed to continue to accelerate".\N With the COVID-19 rules in place, we will not be able to follow our presentation with supper, but there will be an opportunity to ask questions.\N We hope to see you there.\N Arnold Dekker\NCoordinator - Sutton Landcare Group
